Asberry AME, St. Mark's AME, and Second Baptist cont.

The blog will only allow me so much space so this is getting spread out into several posts although I see it as one.

St. Mark's AME--the church was founded in 1864 and it is the church where Linda Brown's father was the Revered. It has recently received a grant from the National Park Service for restoration. It  is not on the National Register, but it should be.  The church webpage history http://www.stjohnametopeka.org/about.html says that this building was built in the 1880s and the cornerstone confirms this.  Notice the height of the foundation--smart thinking.
